Consultation on the draft Redland Housing Strategy has now closed
Feedback from the community on the draft Redland Housing Strategy (the Strategy) will now inform preparation of the final Strategy, which is expected to be released in 2024.
We’re planning housing supply, now and in the future
The Queensland Government is preparing the Redland Housing Strategy and published a draft for community feedback. The draft Strategy provides a pathway to achieving greater housing supply and diversity in the right locations, to meet the needs of both current and future populations for the Redlands to 2046.
Supporting community aspirations
Input provided by the Redland community and stakeholder groups as part of the housing needs consultation held in June 2023 provided strong direction for the draft Strategy.
The community told us they value the natural environment of the Redlands and the relaxed coastal lifestyle. Community, business and the development industry told us they would all like planning for infrastructure and housing to be integrated.
Responding to housing need
In conjunction with planning for the ShapingSEQ 2023 Update, the draft Redland Housing Strategy works to:
- achieve a provision of housing options to meet the community’s needs
- improve housing choices across the Redland area
- support the values and aspirations of the Redland community.

Redland Housing Strategy key proposals
The draft Redland Housing Strategy (the Strategy) provides a pathway to achieving greater housing supply and diversity in the right locations, to meet the needs of both current and future populations for the Redlands to 2046.
The draft Strategy identifies the housing needs of the Redland community as captured through engagement, statistical analysis and future projections.
It outlines the existing housing context and emerging trends for the aims to ensure there is an adequate supply and variety of housing types available to suit current and future community needs by identifying mechanisms to facilitate improved planning.
The draft Strategy is a long-term vision on how planning can meet the needs of Redland as part of the South East Queensland community.
The draft Strategy seeks to:
- deliver greater housing diversity to support all household types
- diversify housing stock, including potential provision of freehold townhouses
- deliver more diverse dwellings at higher densities within proximity to major public transport infrastructure
- support gentle density in low and low-medium density residential areas
- support housing diversity around key Redland employment and health areas to support local employment opportunities
- house the population and meet dwelling supply targets set out by the draft ShapingSEQ 2023 Update
- plan for necessary supply through well located and serviced greenfield development
- deliver additional development through infill to support higher densities around Principal Activity Centres at Cleveland and Capalaba
- provide appropriate housing diversity by responding to local neighbourhood characteristics
- deliver additional age-appropriate dwellings to cater for the ageing population.
The draft Redland Housing Strategy works alongside the ShapingSEQ 2023 Update and State Policy Planning (2017) to provide an evidence base to support future amendments to the Redland City Plan 2018.
